Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover

Los Angeles native Mike Stilkey has always been attracted to painting and drawing not only on vintage paper, record covers and book pages, but on the books themselves. Using a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey depicts characters that often seem deep in thought, somber, and sometimes whimsical.

Re-Do

Moving back home is never a 24 year old's ideal dream, but when I had no where else to go, I luckily had the best parents who welcomed me back. I unfortunately was given my moms art studio to move into. After a lot of cleaning and clearing out, I was left with yellow walls, and a sink...hmmm not very inspiring.

So with some fresh "oops" paint for $10 from Lowes and decorative wall accessories such as my vintage sea horse wallpaper in frames from Ikea, to my love poster from a garage sale, and simple clean looking furniture, I soon felt home again.

BEE-utiful accessories

Bees are one of the classic motifs of interior design, thanks largely to Napoleon. But their geometric marvel — the honeycomb — has also been adopted by designers as a perfect building block of pattern. In the swinging sixties, it took a turn toward Mod with David Hicks and Mark Hampton as champions. Today it's architectural, bold, or brightly patchworked. Does it say modern or does it say traditional?

and this hexagon pattern has the added bonus of gold foil.

 

Denguri paper was used to create a lantern-like shading effect for this unique honeycomb lamp. It is a local product of the Shikoku region in Japan. The fold-out paper outline can surround any light bulb and socket with the stretch folds producing a honeycomb pattern.
